Don’t Miss These Foods in Korea #36. 3+1 Must-Visit Trendy Cafes in Yongridan-gil: Where Coffee Meets Culture

In our previous post, we explored Yongsan Station: The Ultimate Complete Travel Guide, the massive transportation hub of Seoul. However, spending your entire time inside the station would mean missing out on the vibrant life just outside its doors.

Just a short walk from the station lies "Yongridan-gil," one of Seoul’s hottest and most "hip" neighborhoods. Back when I worked in the Yongsan district, these streets were my daily escape. From hidden gems that helped me recharge to "Instagrammable" hotspots that set social media on fire, I’m sharing my personal "insider" list of the best cafes in the area.

☕ Why Coffee is a "Religion" in South Korea

Before we dive into the recommendations, it’s important to understand why "Cafe Hopping" is a mandatory part of any Korean itinerary. South Korea is a "Coffee Republic," with per capita consumption nearly three times the global average.

For Koreans, a cafe isn't just a place to grab a quick caffeine fix. It is a multi-functional space: a creative office for freelancers, a cozy living room for friends, and a curated gallery for art lovers. Yongridan-gil is the epicenter of this sophisticated cafe culture, where historic architecture meets modern design. Let’s look at the four spots you cannot miss.

1. Mosent (Yongsan Branch): The Purist’s Choice

“A sanctuary for specialty hand-drip enthusiasts”

If you are a coffee "purist" who values the origin and quality of the bean above all else, Mosent (모센트) is your destination. This cafe is a beautifully renovated two-story traditional house, offering a minimalist and calming aesthetic that contrasts with the busy city outside.

  • Customized Brewing: What sets Mosent apart is the level of customization. You can select your specific coffee beans based on your preference for acidity, body, or floral notes. As someone who loves hand-drip coffee, I spent many quiet afternoons here adjusting my choice to match my mood.

  • The Architect’s Vibe: Because it was once a home, the space is divided into several cozy nooks and corners. It is the perfect place for travelers to sit down, organize their photos, or discuss their next destination in a peaceful environment.

2. GOONIES: The Creative Soul of Yongridan-gil

“From Peanut Butter Lattes to Natural Wine”

For those seeking a more energetic and "street-style" vibe, GOONIES (구니스) is a must-visit. This was one of my most frequent haunts because of its unique interior and bold menu.

  • Signature Drink: Goonies Nuts: You haven't truly visited GOONIES until you try the "Goonies Nuts." This masterpiece is a blend of creamy oat milk, rich peanut butter cream, and a sharp espresso shot. It’s the perfect balance of savory and sweet.

  • Unique Bakery Treats: Their pastries are as creative as their decor. They offer seasonal treats, including ghost and skull-shaped bread during Halloween. They are as delicious as they are "photo-worthy."

During the Halloween season, skull-shaped bread is on display at GOONIES.

  • Nighttime Vibes: Originally known for its DJ booths and club-like atmosphere, GOONIES still retains its edgy soul. In the evening, they serve natural wine and beer, making it a great spot to experience the trendy nightlife of Seoul’s younger generation.

3. Teddy Beurre House: The Instagram Star

“A fairytale world of bears and premium pastries”

Teddy Beurre House (테디뵈르하우스) is perhaps the most famous spot on this list, especially among young professionals and social media influencers. Entering this cafe feels like stepping into a vintage European dollhouse.

  • World-Class Pastries: The head pastry chef here gained massive fame after appearing on the hit Netflix series "Culinary Class Wars" (흑백요리사). Their croissants, pastries, and egg tarts are legendary for their buttery, flaky texture.

  • Aesthetic Interiors: The teddy-bear-themed decor is incredibly charming. Every corner is designed for the perfect photo, making it a favorite for those looking to document their Seoul journey beautifully.

  • Insider Tip: Because of its viral popularity, there is often a long queue during lunch hours (12:30 PM – 1:00 PM). I recommend visiting after 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM to avoid the crowd and secure a seat without a long wait.

🎁 The "Secret" Special Recommendation: TIME

“The ultimate hidden gem for coffee connoisseurs”

I hesitated to share this last one because it is my personal "secret hideout." Located slightly away from the main Yongridan-gil strip, TIME (타임) is for the true coffee lover who prioritizes taste above all else.

  • Exquisite Quality: They serve G1-grade beans (the highest quality) from the Aricha region of Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia. The floral aroma and clean finish are, in my opinion, the best in all of Yongsan.

  • The K-Gimbap Twist: Here is the unique part—this cafe sells traditional Korean Gimbap (seaweed rice rolls) during breakfast and lunch hours! While K-Food is trending globally, here you can experience it the way locals do: as a quick, delicious breakfast paired with world-class coffee.

  • Important Note: This is a very intimate space with only two tables. It is not suitable for groups of four or more to sit and linger. It’s best for solo travelers or pairs who want to enjoy a moment of excellence before heading back out to explore.

💡 How to Plan Your Perfect Day in Yongsan

To make the most of your visit, I suggest combining these cafes with the following local landmarks for a full-day itinerary:

  1. Morning Architecture: Start by admiring the stunning, futuristic architecture of the Amorepacific Headquarters. It’s an iconic building that symbolizes modern Seoul.

  2. Cafe Hopping: Choose one of the spots above (I suggest Teddy Beurre House for the morning pastries!) and enjoy the local vibe.

  3. Afternoon Walk: After your coffee, head over to Yongsan Park (Yongsan Children's Garden). This former US military base has been transformed into a beautiful park with vast green fields and a unique "exotic" atmosphere right in the heart of Seoul.

I hope your journey through the streets of Yongridan-gil is as flavorful and inspiring as the coffee served there. If you found this guide helpful, please leave a comment and share it with your fellow travelers!
